2014/15 Season Wrap

Rating: 5.00/5 (3 Votes)

We have hit our end of season break and given the boat will be out of the water for repairs, upgrades and engine maintenance over the next few weeks, I know there are a few of us that are wondering what to do on Saturday mornings until racing kicks off again in September.

It’s a good time to reflect on what was a big year For High Anxiety so firstly let me say a big thank you to all the crew for taking time out of your busy lives to turn up each week rain, hail or shine. You showed great resilience during the tough races and real dedication in training up on the boat and getting qualified for safety at sea. Furthermore many of use your annual leave to race up the coast at Christmas.

Quite literally we couldn’t do it without your commitment so many thanks!

FY 15/16 Racing

We had some great racing results, placing in the SOPS series, Blue Water series and with podium finishes in the Sydney & Newcastle races.  The Whisper Mug was again the thorn in my side as we ran aground to blow our lead at the halfway mark. Our Sydney Regatta program didn’t go quite as well as we hoped this year but we had fun!

 trophy list

The calendar is up on the website now and our focus areas for this year will be the 5 RPAYC Blue Water Races (including Coffs) and the SOPS Series.  We might get a little more serious inshore this year with a focus on boat handling and training new crew up for the offshore races.

For fun, we will be again contesting the Whisper Mug in December (Which I really want to win this year on our 4th attempt) and the Sydney Harbour Regatta.

 Morgs

Hopefully by the end of next year’s season we should be able to roll straight into next year’s Sydney to Southport race in July.  Let’s hope that they drop the HF radio requirement in the SI’s and let us use a sat phone as a substitution. Or there might be more of a discussion to be had.

 People

Firstly congratulations again to Matt & Dave on their Annual Awards they were very well deserved,  a fun night was had by all and I finally got the trophy’s engraved so the guys have them now.

SOTY

We have won and lost this year with some great people namely Danielle and Vini leaving us for greener pastures overseas. Casper has been keeping Morag busy on maternity leave and Susii was sidelined by injury.

Happily on the flip side we have picked up some real talent in Nina, Rachel and Ben, and I was impressed with our Crew experience guys Deb, Dimitri and Anatoli. We are trying to convert the guys to full timers over summer.

So short term have recruited and have a bit of training the new people up to ensure we have a full team with redundancy for the overnight races. We plan to take off for Coffs Harbour and Cabbage Tree with 10 people this year.  Ideally we will have 8 regulars and 2 spots for ring-ins ….hint/hint (Len, Dan, Dani, Leonie?)

Other Stuff to Note

A couple of boat upgrades to get excited about is a new paint job later in the year, Keel repairs, engine overhaul and AIS. For those of you that watched the Volvo ocean race you will know this will let us see the other boats on our chart plotter. There will be some minor improvements in the cabin to the nav station and Morag insists on either a new toilet or some meaningful improvements to the existing one!  More on that in subsequent articles…..

Casper

Time pressures mean this year I will also be progressively moving away from the HA-Crew.com blog which takes a lot of time to get a post up and onto our Facebook page which is much more real time. Multiple admins including Matt, Rachel, Susii makes it much easier to keep updated  and current. You can find us at www.facebook.com/hacrewsailing/

The calendar and site will stay up but posts may be much less frequent.

So that’s about it from me…. Well done on a great 2014/15 season, lets ramp it up this year!
